Scaffold* Journal, a project of the SHIFT* Collective, is a process-oriented research journal that aims to validate acts of creative process as work within themselves. Platforming disciplines relating to the built environment, Scaffold* aims to elevate the incomplete, the working versions, the infinite sketches and the iterative process work that are byproducts of designing. Published in two volumes—one focusing on process documentation, and the other focusing on projects in their completed iterations—Scaffold* sees process as practicum, and centres around the positions, tools, and frameworks that define the methodologies of its contributors.

Scaffold* will be published in two editions per volume; the first showcasing process work, and the second showcasing polished work. We intend to release this in omnibus format in late September, so stay tuned. Until then, the Edition 1 work of our contributors is available digitally and can be accessed through our website. Our final publication, including the digital version of the first volume, is curated based on six interviews that we conducted with emerging and established academics and practitioners that work within the Daniels and U of T community. As we conducted these interviews, we observed that each seemed to represent its own distinct methodology, and have curated our contributions around these. As such, there may be some topical overlap between categories. We invite you to draw connections as you see fit–Scaffold* hugely advocates for interdisciplinarity, especially as it relates to one’s unique positionality.

Scaffold* is committed to the dissemination of work pertaining to art, design, and the built environment, including (but not limited to) works in architecture, landscape, urbanism, geography, visual studies and forestry. In particular, Scaffold* desires to highlight and create space for non-conventional methods of research, especially those that elevate one’s unique positionality and practice.
